Did other countries or tribes have religious beliefs similar to those in Christianity?
YES!!! There have been MANY that ALSO additionally believed in:
- Monotheism (belief in ONLY ONE God)
- Sin (evil behaviors and inclinations inborn to humans separating us from God)
- Sacrificial system used to atone for those sins
- God-imposed system of righteous living and ethical treatment of others in society
- A church system where neighborhoods would meet together to eat bread and drink wine together, and to sing and worship God together as a community of people
- Worldwide flood in the past that annhilated sinful people that wouldn’t repent
- God delivering messages to all the people using a chosen prophet
- God delivering message to individuals using dreams/visions
- A coming “Messiah” that would eventually come to save them (or a message from “white people” (that they had NEVER SEEN before) that this Messiah has already come and/or to deliver a message)
Can this be coincidence? I’ll leave that to you to decide but I have a hard time believing so. God tells us, in the Bible (Genesis 14:18–20), about a King named Melchizedek that met Abraham. He bestowed a blessing on Abraham in the name of El Elyon (“God Most High”) and praised God for giving Abraham a victory in battle. Abraham presented Melchizedek with a tithe (a tenth) of the items he had gathered. In this act Abraham indicated that he recognized Melchizedek as a priest who ranked higher spiritually than he. God teaches us here that He was also being worshipped by other peoples outside of His chosen people to use. They didn’t know Him by the same name (and they knew less about Him) but nonetheless they were still worshipping the True God!
Nearly a millenium later, King David was speaking in the Holy Spirit and God gave Him this prophetic message about the future Messiah (Jesus Christ) in (Psalm 110:1, 4):
“The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool… The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,“You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
In the New Testament, the writer of Hebrews confirms Jesus as the One whom was prophesied about. Further this illustrates that Jesus would be the Messiah (Savior) of the world—not just the people of Israel. God has worked mysteriously to prime and prepare many people throughout the world to receive Jesus. (Hebrews 5:6–11) and (Hebrews 6:20–7:28)
“You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek… And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.”
Don Richardson, in his book: Eternity in Their Hearts: Startling Evidence of Belief in the One True God in Hundreds of Cultures Throughout the World takes you through the journey of how Christian missionaries have discovered many of these indigenous tribes over the past few hundred years who were just patiently ready and waiting to hear the message that they came there to deliver!
